Published on 07/19/2010
The state of Georgia has made its sex offender laws less severe. These laws were previously considered among the toughest in the entire country.
The old laws had been continually challenged by many civil liberties groups who claimed they were unconstitutionally severe.
After a number of these challenges were successful, the state legislature decided to change the laws for fear that the they would be altogether struck down in federal court.
Now, about 13,000 sex offenders who were convicted of crimes committed before June of 2003 will be able to live wherever they choose.
The old laws effectively banned offenders from living in cities as it banned them from living and working near schools, parks, churches, or any place where children gather.
